Cherry Blossom Season 2025: When To See Sakura In Japan

Posted on

For those dreaming of experiencing the sakura season in Japan, the forecast that you’ve long been waiting for is finally here!

On January 9, Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) released its initial cherry blossom forecast for 2025, heralding the much-anticipated arrival of hanami (cherry blossom viewing) season across the nation.

This year, the temperatures from January to March are expected to be average or slightly higher, so the blooming period is projected to align closely with the usual annual patterns, as opposed to last year’s lengthy delay.

When will cherry blossoms bloom in Japan in 2025?

The JMC predicts that cherry blossoms will first appear in Kagoshima, Fukuoka, and Kōchi around March 22. As the season progresses, the “cherry blossom front” will advance from western to eastern Japan in late March, reaching regions such as Hokuriku and Tōhoku in April. The southern tip of Hokkaidō is expected to see blossoms by the end of April, with Sapporo’s first bloom anticipated around May 1. In the capital Tokyo, the initial bloom is forecasted for March 24.

Regional Highlights

  • Kagoshima, Fukuoka, and Kōchi: These southern cities are set to lead the sakura season with blooms starting as early as March 22.
  • Tokyo: The capital’s cherry blossoms are expected to begin blooming on March 24, offering residents and visitors the chance to enjoy hanami (flower viewing) in late March.
  • Kyoto and Osaka: Both cities are projected to see blossoms starting around March 27, aligning with the traditional timing for these historic locations.
  • Sapporo: In the northern region of Hokkaidō, the first bloom is anticipated around May 1, marking one of the latest starts in the country.

Can the sakura season forecast for 2025 still change?

Definitely. There are many factors influencing the blooming of cherry blossoms, including temperature fluctuations and climate conditions. Every year, the sakura buds form in summer and enter a dormant state well into winter. Once the temperature changes and becomes warmer, the growth of the buds then lead to blooming. This means, the sooner the temperatures rise, the earlier the sakura season will be. However, if the cold continues for a longer period, the blooming of the cherry blossoms will be delayed.

How do I plan for Sakura Season 2025?

Spring is arguably Japan’s busiest season in terms of travel, with both local and foreign tourists checking out the best cherry blossom viewing spots all over the country.

Given the popularity of sakura season, you are highly advised to book your flight and accommodations well in advance. That being said, keep in mind that the blooming period of sakura is brief, typically lasting about a week from first bloom to full bloom. Even with ample preparations, catching the blooming season can be a hit or miss, depending on the dates you chose and the regions you have decided on traveling to.

How do I stay updated on Sakura Season 2025?

The JMC provides regular updates on cherry blossom forecasts, utilizing data from approximately 1,000 viewing spots nationwide. For the most current information, including regional predictions and bloom status, the Otenki Navigator site offers detailed insights. However, the website is fully in Japanese.
