20+ Attractions And Activities In Tokyo For Kids (And The Young At Heart)

Posted on

Traveling with children in a megalopolis like Tokyo may sound like a daunting task, but it actually is not!

The Japanese capital has tons of unique sights and experiences that are not just enjoyable, but also memorable to kids of all ages—and, yes, that includes those who consider themselves young at heart!

From theme parks and aquariums to massive play areas and sensory art facilities, listed below are over 20 attractions in Tokyo that your kids will surely love:

Tokyo Disney Resort

Let’s start with the “Happiest Place On Earth.” Japan has not just one, but two major Disney parks, namely Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. Although, it must be said that neither are exactly located in Tokyo—they’re in Chiba, a city some 40 kilometers east of Tokyo.

Each park has rides and attractions that are exclusive to its own, so if you and your kids are huge Disney fans and you have the time (plus budget) to check out both, Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea will be well worth your time. However, if you only have to choose one for your trip, here are some things you might want to take into consideration:

Tokyo Disneyland

Taking inspiration from the original Disney parks in the United States, Tokyo Disneyland exudes the old-time charm of a classic Disney park. Its centerpiece is the Cinderella Castle, which is surrounded by popular rides, such as Castle Carousel, Alice’s Tea Party, and the all-time favorite “it’s a small world.” You can say Tokyo Disneyland is more suitable for families with little children, but adults will also enjoy attractions like Pooh’s Hunny Hunt and the Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast.

Location: 1-1 Maihama, Urayasu, Chiba 279-0031, Japan
Operating Hours: 8:00 to 22:00 daily
Admission Fees: Park ticket prices vary. Check the official website for accurate pricing information.
How To Get There: Take a train on the JR  Keiyo Line or Musashino Line to Maihama Station. Transfer to the Disney Resort Line to Tokyo Disneyland.

Tokyo DisneySea

The only DisneySea in the world is home to more thrill rides and scenic man-made landscapes that will appeal to bigger kids and adults. Its adventure theme will take you to various experiential zones: The Mediterranean Harbor, Arabian Coast, Mysterious Island, American Waterfront, Lost River Delta, Mermaid Lagoon, and Port Discovery. Come June 2024, *a whole new world* called “Fantasy Springs” will open at Tokyo DisneySea, and it will feature thematic areas from Walt Disney movies like Frozen, Peter Pan, and Tangled.

Location: 1-13 Maihama, Urayasu, Chiba 279-8511, Japan
Operating Hours: 9:00 to 21:00 daily
Admission Fees: Park ticket prices vary. Check the official website for accurate pricing information.

Odaiba

This artificial island developed on Tokyo Bay is a massive entertainment hub that welcomes people of all ages.

In the morning, your family can enjoy a leisurely stroll on the Skywalk Observation Deck that will take you around famous landmarks in the area, such as the futuristic Fuji TV Building and Japan’s 12.25-meter tall Statue of Liberty.

From the Skywalk, make your way to DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, a massive shopping mall with the imposing Unicorn Gundam statue upfront. Don’t forget to snap some photos before picking up Gunpla Kits at The Gundam Base located within DiverCity.

Kids who love playing with LEGO will have a grand time at LEGOLAND Discovery Center Tokyo at DECKS Tokyo Beach Seaside Mall. Let the little ones turn their imagination into reality with colorful blocks at Duplo Village or the Lego Factory. Admire miniature LEGO dioramas of famous spots in Japan at Mini Land. And, hop on child-friendly rides at Kingdom Quest and Merlin’s Apprentice.

If you’re traveling with fans of SEGA, Tokyo Joypolis is a mustn’t-miss! This attraction—also situated at DECKS Tokyo Beach Seaside Mall—is Japan’s largest indoor amusement park. It features a high-speed coaster, thrill rides, and VR experiences. You can also snap a commemorative photo with Sonic—SEGA’s beloved blue hedgehog.

Cap off your day with a nice meal at Aqua City, where you can do a last-minute shopping run at The Disney Store

Tokyo Skytree Town

The world’s tallest tower has a town of its own, where entertainment, shopping, and discovery intersect. Welcome to Tokyo Skytree Town

Reachable on foot via the Sumida River Walk from the also-busy Asakusa district, this recreational complex draws over a million tourists annually. The three main attractions in the area are the Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Solamachi, and Sumida Aquarium.

On a clear day, you might even be able to spot Mt. Fuji! You and your family can opt for Tembo Deck tickets only or you can get the combo ticket, which includes both observatories.

On Tembo Deck, you can purchase souvenirs at the gift shop and send a letter that carries a unique Tokyo Skytree stamp.
